Making sure you get the right home insurance

In these days of online insurance firms and price comparison websites, it has never been easier – or cheaper - to get your home insurance sorted. However, some of these cheap deals can turn out to be something of a false economy, as they do not provide you with adequate cover for some of the more likely eventualities. So if you should happen to damage or lose a valuable asset in a way that is not covered by your insurance policy, you could end up being ‘compensated’ with cheap replacements for your expensive goods, or worse, nothing at all.

While it is true that many of the cheapest insurance deals are available from new companies who are trying to establish themselves, it is also true that there is an increased risk factor attached with these new companies. If your cheap online insurance provider goes broke, as is happening more and more frequently, you are only entitled to 90% of any outstanding claims after the long process of liquidation is completed. Larger, more established companies are less likely to disappear overnight, and have more to lose by ill-treating their customers. Some of the more established brands are still able to offer some surprisingly competitive deals if you’re willing to do some of the work of processing the application for them. For instance, Kwik Fit Insurance offers a fifteen percent discount on their home insurance policies if you apply online rather than over the phone. Visit their website to get a quote on contents insurance.

A home insurance policy usually comes with a lengthy list of terms and conditions. Although they’re never a riveting read, it is important to read and understand them thoroughly before you commit to a purchase. For instance, you might assume that the standard home insurance policy offers protection against the likelihood of accidental damage. In fact, it’s a cost option on almost all contents insurance policies. So if you spill a bottle of Rioja all over your shag-pile, don’t expect your insurance to pay out for a new carpet unless you have specified accidental damage as part of your insurance cover.

Also, goods that are covered by contents insurance when they are in the home are rarely insured once out of the home – again unless you specify it as a cost option when buying your policy. So it’s important to make sure that you understand what your policy does and does not cover you for before you sign.
