Metal Fairy Jewelry at Ryepress
Anyone walking past the Ryepress studio and gallery in Hastings High Street recently may have noticed the introduction of splashes of pink in the gallery window and the swirls, twists and glowing coils of wire wrapped copper pendants, cuffs and rings almost growing out of the etched copper plates in the display. Metal Fairy Jewelry has arrived!
Collette Murphy is my partner in the gallery and has now launched her handmade, wire wrapped fine art Jewelry; Metal fairy, in collaboration with Ryepress.
Collette has developed her own unique style to create highly original and individual hand made fine art Jewelry, Incorporating silver, copper, bronze and gold fill wire of varying thickness to wrap intricate coils, swirls and twists around gemstones, seashells and found objects. Using watch cogs, wheels, and intricate brass parts from obscure derelict machines she constructs elaborate wire wrapped pendants, cuffs and bracelets turning the obsolete and overlooked into highly individual pieces of fascinatingly beautiful Jewelry.
This is a little asymmetric pendant made from a looped silver wire frame with freshwater pearls coiled on to it. I have one of these and wear it nearly all the time - mine is made of bronze and gold pearls, this one is pink, grey and cream. Simple and elegant and a fantastic present. This pendant measures just under 1.5 inches and can be supplied on a 16 or 18 inch silver chain.

CRAFTY TWIST!
Wire wrap is method of hand fabricating Jewelry. The possibility for variation and originality in design is enormous and the tools required can be fairly minimal. Wires are wrapped or bound together, sometimes twisted and/or coiled into metal ‘beads’. Essential tools would include flush cutters, chain nose pliers, round pliers, files and a mandrel. I use many other things, including hand made tools of my own and my father’s design, in order to achieve the effects I want.

Materials and Techniques
Most Metal Fairy Jewelry contains semi-precious gem stones, although I also use found objects, glass, polymer clay and vintage stones

Purist wire wrapping means that no solder or glue may be used in the creation of a piece of Jewelry.
Variations of these techniques were used by the Vikings in the 10th Century AD, and have been used by many other civilisations throughout the years.
