The Nude Torso paintings are a series of paintings (2011-2012) exploring the body as a landscape in a fixed format (2 x 3) on a dark background. The body is painted in a non linear way, in tonal and non naturalistic colours. The original paintings are 24 ins x 36 ins canvas on stretchers. The oil paint is applied over the stained or primed background using brushes, rags sponges and fingers, often the paint is wiped off or rubbed down before it is completely dry to leave thin glowing areas of colour with thicker oil paint scumbled or dragged over to produce varied textures.
When it comes to preparing canvases for painting I tend to stick to traditional methods as laid out by Cennino d'Andrea Cennini - The Craftsman's Handbook, Il libro dell'arte in the Renaissance
