BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS: Sensuous nostalgic glamour
These photographs are a playful effort at boudoir style black and white photography evoking the glamour and nostalgia of old 1940’s and 1950’s movie star pin ups; those creative, glamorous and teasing photographs I enjoyed as a schoolboy; the age of Marilyn Monroe, well thumbed books of sensuous black and white fine art photography from the school library and the occasional naughty magazine borrowed from older boys! The essence of these photographs is fun. The model is comfortable and in control . The result is a soft sensuality a million miles from the mass produced world of so called glamour magazines, endless tacky “galleries” of vacuous East European “teens” or even the main stream cynicism of the likes of Jordan (sorry Katie Price)
One big advantage of digital photography is its immediacy; the photographer is independent of any outside processing or printing and freed from these constraints able to experiment with subject matter that would certainly raise an eyebrow or two at the local chemists or communal photographic darkroom!
Black and White Photography in a digital age
The black and white photographs here were a experiment in boudoir glamour photographs using a Digital Camera set to black and white and using where possible, natural light. Black and white is the natural choice for boudoir style glamour photography and having developed and printed my own Black and white film in the past it was my first choice when attempting glamour photography for the first time. There is a sensuous sophistication to Black and White photographs that some how gets lost with colour photography
These paintings draw on an eclectic range of influences that include Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Caravaggio and even the famous pin up artist of the 1940’s an 1950’s, Alberto Vargas!
