WRYPRESS, RYEPRESS?
Welcome to Wry Press! This is the part of the site where I put down the brushes, wipe the etching ink off my fingers and pick up a pen, or stab at the keyboard!
Many of those who visit Ryepress are unaware that for a thankfully short time I was better known as a singer / songwriter locally than as an artist.. For several years I performed my satirical songs and parodies at gigs and open mic nights around Hastings and Rye. Over the last few years the gallery and my painting and printmaking have left me little time to rehearse and I have drifted out of practice. Never a natural musician, I nevertheless was proud of the body of songs I had written although I placed far more importance on the lyrics than my singing or guitar playing abilities.
! have gone through most of these lyrics and edited and adapted them to present here as “poetry”. The lyrics were influenced by the likes of Tom Lehrer, Billy Bragg, and Kirsty MacColl and so the poems are definitedly more along the lines of John Cooper-Clarke than Keats or Wordsworth! Hopefully I will be adding to this collection in the future.
I have always loved words - just not been too good in grammar, spellyng or: punc-tuation?!
I have been described as a wordsmith, and full of “pith and wit” (at least I think that was what they said) and have often relied on a quick turn of phrase to escape a dodgy situation; often itself brought on by a slightly too “quick turn of phrase “!
I have also ncluded here some of my favourite scribblings from the short-lived Bad Track Records blog: (blogging seemed too become much like a proper job!)
